About the AR experience

Augmented reality (AR) adds a digital layer that you experience through a phone or tablet. The works here began as digital drawings, paintings and works on paper. Their animations were created later as a way to extend the original images. A phone or tablet lets you experience this additional layer: use the Artivive app for the Metagraphs, or scan the QR code specific to a Motion Painting or Motion Work on Paper to open its animation in the mobile browser. The videos on this page preview those animations.

Metagraphs

Metagraphs are abstract digital drawings whose gestural lines can take form as prints, animations and augmented-reality experiences.

About this series

Goldberg began the Metagraph series in 1999, drawing in Adobe Illustrator with a tablet. These are vector drawings: their lines and shapes are described mathematically, allowing an image to be rendered at different scales. The name Metagraph refers to this underlying description of the image, which can exist in more than one physical or digital form. Gesture and automatic drawing give the compositions their expressive character. Physical prints and editions are recorded separately from the digital originals. Beginning in 2021, Goldberg extended selected drawings into animations with sound. These moving versions also appear in augmented reality and in the Metagraphs book. Use the Artivive app to view an AR-enabled physical work; the video above previews its animation.

Motion Paintings

Motion Paintings extend the Wireframe series into animation, using generative tools to set images of the physical paintings into motion.

About this series

Begun in 2004, the Wireframe series developed from Goldberg’s Metagraph digital drawings. Gestural lines were rotated in three-dimensional space to form structures that recall architectural and engineering drawings. Printed onto painted surfaces, these digital structures meet the textures and gestures of acrylic, oil and ink on canvas or linen. This exchange between digital construction and physical painting helped shape the approach Goldberg named Techspressionism in 2011. For Motion Paintings, generative tools were used to animate images of selected finished paintings, extending their lines, forms and surfaces through time. The painted work provides the starting image for its moving counterpart. Scan the QR code specific to a painting with a mobile device to open the animation in the mobile browser. The video above previews that experience.

Motion Works on Paper

Motion Works on Paper use generative tools to animate selected works from the Wireframe series, extending their painted and printed imagery into movement.

About this series

The Wireframe series began in 2004 as a development of Goldberg’s Metagraph digital drawings. Rotating gestural lines in three-dimensional space produced structures reminiscent of architectural and engineering drawings. In the works on paper, these digital structures combine with painted and printed surfaces, bringing precise line work into contact with the textures of ink, paint and paper. This movement between digital and physical processes helped shape the approach Goldberg named Techspressionism in 2011. Generative tools were subsequently used to set images of selected finished works into motion, giving their existing lines, forms and surfaces a time-based expression. Scan the QR code specific to a work with a mobile device to open its animation in the mobile browser. The video above previews that experience.

Metagraphs: Augmented Reality Art by Colin Goldberg, foreword by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky

The AR Book

Metagraphs: Augmented Reality Art brings Colin Adriel Goldberg’s digital drawings into a printed book, with a foreword by Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky. The page is both an image to contemplate and a starting point for animation: viewed through the Artivive app on a mobile device, selected drawings unfold into moving compositions with sound.

The demonstration above shows how the physical book and its animated layer work together. The printed image remains a complete artwork in its own right, while movement and audio offer another way to experience its structure and rhythm. The book is available to purchase through Amazon.
